About This Quote

One of the great wonders of Christianity is that you were born into your times, to set your times aright. This quote is one of those which has become so much a part of the curriculum at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, where I teach, that it has taken on a life of its own. It was said by St.

Paul after he had been shipwrecked on the island of Malta during his first missionary journey to Europe. He became depressed about what had happened to him and all he could think about was how he would end his days, sitting down in some quiet place to wait for death. He started to fret about his impending death and wondered why he had been spared so much suffering.

It was then that someone told him that it wasn’t up to him because God had made him for a purpose. That something greater was happening in his life—the birth of the Church, which would carry the message of Christ throughout the world.
